Eneko Agirre presenting at *SEM 2013

Eneko Agirre and Aitor Gonzalez-Agirre participated in *SEM 2013: The Second Joint Conference on Lexical and Computational Semantics held in Atlanta, USA on June 13-14 2013, and the 2013 edition of the SemEval workshop series.

This year there also was a new pilot task on typed-similarity between semi-structured records. The items of this second task were taken from Europeana (http://www.europeana.eu/), a single access point to millions of books, paintings, films, museum objects and archival records that have been digitized throughout Europe. It is an authoritative source of information coming from European cultural and scientific institutions. Typically, the items comprise meta-data describing a cultural heritage item and, sometimes, a thumbnail of the item itself.

Eneko Agirre presented the Shared Task on “Semantic Textual Similarity”, which included data from PATHS and allowed type similarity as designed in PATHS to be evaluated.  The evaluation procedure devised in the project were validated as a result.

Aitor Gonzalez-Agirre presented the PATHS system, which obtained excellent results on the typed similarity dataset.  The performance of PATHS technology was compared to alternative approaches during the workshop.
